Last May, the workings behind Google’s search algorithm appeared to be leaked through internal documents consisting of thousands of pages. According to SparkToro’s Rand Fishkin, an anonymous source emailed him Google search API documents from the tech giant’s own Search division. 

The revelations of the leak include:

  • Google may have factored user clicks into how it ranks websites, something the company has repeatedly denied in the past 
  • Google may have used Chrome data in its search rankings, also refuted by Google in the past 
  • There are references to “twiddlers” (ranking tweaks) that may “boost or demote” web content based on a set of criteria, per The Verge 
  • There are more than 14,000 ranking factors in the leaked search API documents, which could take several weeks to dig through 

In a blog post, Fishkin has stated that Google may have already retired some of the methods mentioned in the documents, employed them for testing or internal purposes only, or even mentioned them on paper but never actually used them. 

To Google’s credit, it has already officially responded to the leak. In an email to The Verge, the world’s most popular search engine has confirmed that the leaked documents are real. But the company warns the public against “making inaccurate assumptions about search based on out-of-context, outdated, or incomplete information.”
