Most of our clients ask us how to improve their webpage authority score or what we have known as Domain Authority (DA) and optimize their authority score. They’re curious – will a higher DA score mean they appear better in Google search results? A good question, worth understanding how this all works. Let’s take a closer look! 

What is Domain Authority? 

Domain Authority (DA) is a score created by Moz (a popular SEO tool). It tries to predict how well your website will rank on search engines. DA is a useful metric, but it is important to remember it’s NOT a metric from Google itself. 

Google previously had its own ranking system called PageRank (PR), but it is no longer in use. As a result, many people use Domain Authority to gauge their website’s potential as a ranking factor.  

Ahrefs and Semrush tools provide scores that analyze similar factors, with a focus on backlinks from important websites. 

You score DA from 0 to 100. The higher your DA, the better your website should theoretically perform in search results. 

Does DA Help You Rank on Google?  

DA itself won’t make you rank higher. But it calculates using factors that aid in ranking, such as the number of high-quality websites linking to your site. Think of it as a way to check your website’s potential.  

Google wants to show websites that are experts in their field. So, focus on creating great content that people trust – that should increase your DA over time.  

How Good is Your DA Score?  

Don’t worry about the number itself. Instead, compare your DA to websites in your niche. A low-looking DA can be great if your competitors also have low scores. We are using SEMrush to track our authority score.   

Here’s a quick way to check:  

Go to Backlink Analytics: Put your website address in it and hit “Analyze.”  

You’ll see your DA score  

Add to four competitors and hit “Compare.”  

If you’re doing as well or better than them, your score is good! DA naturally increases as your website gains more traffic and links.

1. Get Good Backlinks  

Think of backlinks as a virtual vote of confidence from other websites. When a website links to yours, it’s like they’re giving a thumbs up and saying, “This content is valuable and trustworthy!” Google takes note of this support from other sites, which can greatly boost your website’s credibility.  

However, not all backlinks have the same quality. One link from a well-known website in your field is more valuable than multiple links from smaller, unrelated websites.”  

How do you get those awesome backlinks? Here’s the secret:  

  • Create outstanding content people want to link to. This means going beyond basic blog posts. Think:   
  • Case studies: Share the results you’ve achieved (especially with data to back it up!).  
  • Step-by-step guides: Make them super detailed and way better than what’s already out there.  
  • Original research: Did you survey people in your niche? Share your findings!  

2. Write Content People Want to Read  

Getting more people to visit your website will also increase your authority. Here’s how to write the kind of high-quality content that attracts readers: 

  • Be unique. Don’t just rehash what everyone else is saying. Offer a fresh angle, your own experience, or a new perspective.  
  • Get your facts straight, double-check your information, and make sure it’s up to date. Nobody trusts a website that gets things wrong.  
  • Show your sources. Did you use statistics or quotes? Link back to where you found them. This shows you’ve done your homework.  
  • Stay on topic. What are the hot trends or significant questions in your industry? Writing about those things shows you’re in the know.  

3. Watch Out for Bad Links  

Think of backlinks like recommendations. Links from well-respected websites with high-quality backlinks are like glowing reviews! They boost your own site’s credibility. 

However, if you get links from low-quality or spammy websites, Google may see your site as untrustworthy. This can lower your DA score. 

Don’t worry; you don’t have to check every link manually. Tools like Semrush’s Backlink Audit do the work for you. 

The tool will show you all the websites linking to yours and flag any that look suspicious. You can then ask those sites to remove the link or use Google’s “disavow” tool to tell Google to ignore those links.  

4. Link Your Pages Together   

Think of internal links like signposts on your website. They guide visitors and Google to other pages they might find interesting.  

If you write a blog post about SEO audit, make sure to link to your article about website optimization. This tells Google your website offers lots of expertise on puppy care, which helps increase your authority on that topic.  

5. List Your Business on Relevant Websites 

If you’re a local business, think of online directories like the digital YellowPages! Listing your business on websites like Yelp, your local Chamber of Commerce, and industry directories can boost your business. This can increase your visibility and attract more customers. 

Having a presence on these platforms is important to reach a wider audience. Listing your business on these websites can improve your online reputation and credibility. These listings do two important things:  

  • Help customers or clients find you. People often search online to find businesses nearby, so listing your business is vital.  
  • Show Google you’re legit. Search engines want to see that your address, phone number, and other information match across different websites. This proves you’re a real, established business.  

Ensure your information is correct and up-to-date on every listing!  

Remember: Improving your website’s authority takes time. Don’t worry if your DA changes – focus on the long term!

It’s not about obsessing over the DA number itself. Instead, use tools like a domain authority checker to track your progress over time and compare yourself to competitors. Focus on providing value to your audience, and those authority metrics will rise naturally.
