Seven Tips for Filming With A Phone Camera

Phome-Camera-Filming

Phone cameras have come a long way in recent years. They’re now capable of shooting high-quality video that can be used for a variety of purposes, from personal projects to professional productions.

While phone cameras have come a long way, there are a few things you can do to improve the quality of your videos. Your event deserves a captivating teaser. You can use your phone for filming, even without a high-end camera, by following these practices.

Tip 1: Film in 1920×1080 Resolution

When filming with a phone’s front or rear camera, check your camera settings to ensure it is set to 1920×1080 resolution or higher.

Some phones default to 1280×720 for the front camera, so you need to make sure it is adjusted to the stated resolution.

Improve your smartphone videography skills with this tip to shoot great videos.

Tip 2: Shoot in Landscape Mode

Unless you are creating videos specifically for vertically oriented platforms like TikTok or Instagram Stories, record in landscape orientation.

This avoids black bars on the sides of the screen and makes it more suitable for viewing on larger screens. Horizontal videos tend to be more aesthetically pleasing and less claustrophobic.

Filming in landscape mode with enough headroom allows the editor to move the video around and add text or pop-ups anywhere in the composition.

Tip 3: Avoid Moving Towards or Away from the Camera

Stay on one axis only. Zooming and moving will be done in the editing phase to properly time any movements towards or away from the camera.

You can use portrait mode if you are posting your video on TikTok, YouTube Shorts, or social media stories, but avoid excessive movement.

Tip 4: Use a Tripod or Steady Surface

It’s crucial to keep your video steady for a pleasing viewing experience. Avoid holding your phone while recording to prevent shaky footage. If you don’t have a tripod, make sure your phone is on a stable surface.

Tip 5: Keep Your Phone Camera at Eye Level

Position your phone camera at eye level and fill the frame with your subject. Avoid angles where the camera lens is pointing up or down, as this creates a more natural and flattering angle and reduces distractions in the background.

Tip 6: Choose a Location with Clean Background, Good Lighting and Minimal Noise and Echo

Natural sunlight or indoor lighting enhances video quality and subject visibility. Avoid locations with echoes, fans, air conditioners, or other sources of noise that can interfere with audio.

If recording at night, use additional lighting or your phone’s night mode if available. Lighting and echoes are challenging to adjust in editing, so consider them during filming.

Tip 7: Avoid Multi-Colored Clothing

Avoid wearing clothing with multiple colors, as it can make the subject less visually appealing. Simplicity is the key. Opt for clothes with high contrast against the background to highlight the subject.
